A shelter for transgendered youth in Astoria, Queens

Carmen's Place is a shelter specializing in transgendered youth in Astoria, Queens. The program is run by an Anglican priest named, Louis Braxton Jr.

"Many of the kids come from less than ideal family lives, and so some of the role models that might be there were not there," Father Braxton said. "And I'm not talking about all transgendered youth, just the youth that I work with. And so they have to make their own way as to what it is to be male, what it is to be female. I can sometimes come out in really unique ways."

"In our society, in America, in New York City, the least regarded that I have been able to ascertain are transgendered street kids. Kids who are on the streets and because it's such a radical thing to change your identity that many people find them odd or disgusting or fascinating or frightening."
